AGP 2X Motherboard

I have an AGP2x motherboard and would like to know if a AGP 4x\2x card will work in it because I have only onboard graphics (S3 Prosavage) on my computer and a free AGP slot that I want to use.

I dont understand what all this 2x\4x\8x really means so I am hoping someone will explain it to me.

Welcome to TechIMO, mg010a3406!

I'd love to know what is behing your username, but lets answer the question, eh?

Since the card says it is 2x and the mobo says it is 2x, I say install it.

2x, 4x, etc refer to speed capabilities of the AGP slot, but along the way, the AGP slot changed voltage settings, so asking was a good idea.

The voltage issue should not matter here, because both the card and the mobo are saying the same thing.

If you were trying to put an 8x AGP card into a motherboard that only said 1x or 1x 2x, that could be bad for the AGP card.

True, but the cards are "keyed" meaning that there are slots that are cut into the bottom contact edge of the card for different speed cards.

Crap, i'm so lousy at explaining things.

Thanks for you thoughts guys I will go and buy the card now which btw is a ATI RADION 7000 not exactly top of the range but it was reasonably priced and will do for my needs.

As for my username it is part of my email address and was all I could think of at the time of registering.

Here is some info about ATI cards and bacwards compatability

http://mirror.ati.com/support/faq/agpchart.html

The chart, by the way, shows the Radeon 7000 to be quite fine on an AGP2.0 motherboard.
