Kids Strange file transfer issue

So, riddle me this if you will.....

When I copy moderately large amounts of data (approx 1GB) between my workstation and a file server a strange and mysterious thing happens. It takes about 4 minutes if I copy from the server but closer to half an hour if I initiate the transfer from the workstation. This seems rather strange to me, although I am more than willing to assume I have overlooked something simple

Just for the record I will include the following bits and pieces:

Workstation:
AMD XP 1700+.
WinXP Corp + SP1 + Hotfixes (as of last week).
256MB DDR.
Maxtor 40GB 7200rpm IDE HD.

Server:
Dual AMD MP 2200+.
1GB DDR RAM.
Windows Server 2003 + Hotfixes (as of last night).
Lots of U160 73GB SCSI disks.

The machines are about 15 feet apart and connected by a 100 meg switched network segment. For what its worth both have good network cards and neither is running any anti-virus real time protection.

Any ideas?

Regards

ed

PS, this isn't really important but I thought I would ask anyway....

Well I don't know if this would be the case, but have you checked that they're running in full dublex and not half?

Hmm not quite sure why that would make a difference (although its a friday and I am half asleep) but yeah they are both set to full duplex.

Neither do I, but it remotely resembled an issue I had something like 4years ago so I gave it a shot

Could there be a policy that restricts bandwith usage per workstation?

Hmm the plot thickens, I discovered that someone had moved me from the switch stack to an older 100 meg hub. After 30 seconds of recabling and patching myself back into the switch the problem is resolved

However... I am still interested in the reason why it was faster to "pull" a file from the workstation to the server rather than "putting" the same data onto the server from the workstation.

Anyway, thanks for the help.

Might have had something to do with the data being 'pushed' having to look for the IP for each set of packets or something, while when 'pulled' or requested, it already had the IP routed. Or something silly like that?

I don'tknow why it's faster one way vs the other, since you are using the same two computers. But as a note, most HUBs do not support full duplex, so that was likely reason for your slowdown on while on the hub (of course if that HUB was heavily utilized then that may also be a factor).

Yeah the duplex issue confused me as I didn't realise that a crafty person had stuck me on the hub

Just struck me as weird that it would make such a massive difference in the speed depending on the way I copied the files.
