Kids Lost my Office 2000 product key

Hi folks! Well I am a bit tired right now trying to recover my computer from a virus last night. I have run into a problem right now...I am trying to install office 2000 again onto my computer but have lost my product key, it was on the case. Is there a way for me to find the product key in my laptop in the registry or anywhere else so that I can install it on my desktop?

If it comes to this, can I call microsoft and tell them my product ID number to get my code? (Please let there be an easier way!)

Thank you in advanced!

But that would be illegal as you would be installing the software on multiple machines

Truth be told the KEY is NOT listed in the registry. Only the Product ID number This is one good reason why you SHOULD register your software

Let me get this straight, office is installed on your laptop, but you need to install it on your desktop. If im correct on this, then continue. If im not mistaken, when you lauch office, theres a splash screen that pops up for just a second that lists who it is registered to and the product key! .I maybe wrong, ill have to ask my dad, he might know for sure. Try it and see!

and the product key
Product ID is totally different than the "Product Key #" that he is asking for! The Product id is created from the install... the "Product Key #" is the 25 alpha numeric number that you have to use at the first of the install that allows the software to be installed.

the Product ID is created from a "hash" which include such things as

OS type
processor
time of day/date
size of harddrive
ect ect

Download and install Belarc Advisor. It will print up a report that has among other things the product keys and serial numbers of most of your software.

Last I heard you're allowed to install Office on 2 machines ONLY
A WORK machine and a machine at home that you're intending to WORK on.

The idea is, you wont' be WORKING in both places at the same time. The reason I stress work, is because this allowance of the license is only for WORK related reasons. Installing it on yours and your wifes machine so you can both work with it is not allowed. For ONE person...

Vass,

you MAYBE correct....It all depends on WHAT TYPE of license he has. http://www.microsoft.com/piracy/atrisk/faq/default.asp

Can I make a second copy of Microsoft Office for Windows for my portable computer?
The End User License Agreements for many Microsoft application products contain the following sentence in the grant of license section:

"The primary user of the computer on which the Software Product is installed may make a second copy for his or her exclusive use on a portable computer." If your EULA does not contain this sentence, then you may not make a second copy of the software. If your EULA contains this sentence, then, subject to the conditions stated in the EULA, you may make one copy of the software for installation on your portable computer but not on both. The "primary user" is the individual using the computer most of the time it is in use. Only that individual is entitled to use the second copy. Further, the software must be installed on the local hard drive of your computer; you are not entitled to make and use a second copy on your portable computer if you run the primary copy of the software from a network server. Finally, only one secondary copy may be made; you may not install this copy on more than one portable computer.

Can I make a second copy of my operating system software, such as Windows 98, for my home, work or portable computer?
No. The right to make a second copy of a Microsoft software product only applies to some application products and not to operating system software.

woohoo
SEE even I know SOME things lol

Yeah I knew about the OS thing

They're very strict on the whole OS thing.
You may install it on ONE machine, and may never be installed on another machine even if you delete it from the first one blahblahblah lol

Not quite right on that one lol

Heck..you can even legally re-sell MS software!

Yes, as long as you follow the terms of transfer outlined in your license agreement. You may not rent or lease the software, but you may transfer your rights under the End User License Agreement on a permanent basis provided you transfer all copies of the software and all written materials, including the original license agreement and the Certificate of Authenticity where applicable. For any valid transfer, the software recipient must agree to the terms of the EULA. Any transfer must include the most recent product upgrade as well as any prior version that you have, including media and documentation.
Prior to transferring your software you must remove all copies of the product from your machine, including your portable computer in instances where a second copy is allowed.
If you wish to transfer software that was licensed under a Microsoft License Pak, you must transfer all copies of the product to a single new owner. License Paks cannot be broken up.
