My dad has my old computer a transcend mb atk4 w ac97 onboard sound running a 800 duron w 512 ram yamaha burner,a 44x reader40g maxtor hd, tnt 32agp, recently upgraded to xp pro from win me.

prior to upgrading everything was workin well except the sound had stopped--I had upgraded the op sys because it was easier to connect to my wireless belkin 56g network. thought it might help the sound also! It didnt.

every thing else seemed to upgrade well though and works fine except no sound. OK i just pop in another sound card a SB and it should work ok--i doesn't still no audio-and the wireless wont function with the sound card installed??

Could this be caused by power supply? Or do i need to do a fresh install of win xp??

I had this computer running on xp pro before i gave it to him and the ac 97 onboard sound worked fine-any suggestions would be appreciated--thinkin bout upgrading the power supply then reinstalling win xp fresh--but the cost of the power supply could add something to my computer if its not needed--how can i test it? What should i try? Thanks

Where to begin.... What Mbd do you have??? Have you gone to thier support sight?? Which slot is the sound card in and did you disable the on board sound with the jumper or in the bios.??? Did you use the drivers from the mbd disc or download them???( for the onboard sound )

The motherboard is a trancsend akt4 with onboard ac97 sound in the device manager inder ac97 audio controller is device status is "this device is working properly" in fact all devices listed under Sound, vidio and game controllers in propertys states the same! ?

When i go to sound and audio devices in the control panel it says there is no audio device under volume, under audio it shows no play back device--under sound recording it shows Via audio--no sound !

No yellow question marks and nothing listed in Problem devices--so i removed the onboard sound in device mgr shut down-rebooted-- i turned off the sound in the bios and changed the jumper disabling the on board sound and installed a soundblaster card and drivers--still silence

could it be a lack of power ? or do i just gotta do a clean install?
dang it worked well for a couple of years

thanks for your time and suggestions--i'll try a couple more things till next weekend when i get a chance to do a clean install

When it boots...look at the irq assignments that show up on the black and white boot screens....see if by chance the sound has the same irq as something else..like a nic. I had a known good nic and a sound card interfering with each other once.....turns out they both HAD to have irq 5....they would work together ok but the ONLY way was to uninstall them both and install the nic FIRST..lol..THEN the sound.

Maybe it is something weird like that.

Or put the sound card in another PCI slot.

As Pickel has suggested, disable the onboard sound in the BIOS, and install a new sound card.

If he has nothing showing up in device manager or in the audio tab for multimedia properties, then it sounds like the onboard sound is already disabled via BIOS/jumper.

Also, check in your BIOS for these settings. It's usually DEL, F1, or F2 but it depends on your mobo.
