Playing audio CDs in DVD-Drive crashes cpu

I have a Pioneer 16X DVD-120 drive. Whenever I put in an audio CD, my computer crashes. Thinking it was a conflict with the PowerDVD software, I uninstalled the software. Again, same problem. This occurs with any CD audio program I'm using, i.e. Windows Media Player 9.0 and FreeRip MP3.

Does anybody have a clue what the problem is? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Did you check the audeo wire that goes from the DVDrom to the CD IN on the mobo? I have a DVD rom That plays music very well.
My software for the DVD is generic. At the moment using REAL ONE.

The only audio wire I have goes from the DVD-Rom to the Soundblaster card.

Check the IDE port in Device Manager and see id it's in PIO mode (check in the Advanced tab). It should be in DMA.

J-Excel:

Could you provide me with a little more information. I've gone to Device Manager and I don't see anything about IDE ports or PIO mode. BTW, I'm running 98SE. Thanks.

Look for IDE/ATAPI controlers. Double click. Choose the primary or secondary IDE channel by right clicking and choosing properties.
Under advanced tab you can choose DMA mode

Stroyal:

Sorry, but I'm not seeing anything you're describing. Under Device Manager I have an icon for "Hard Disk Controllers." Expanding that tree I am given three choices:

1. Primary IDE controller (dual fifo)

2. Secondary IDE controller (dual fifo)

3. Via Bus Master PCI IDE Controller

The tab choices I am given by right-clicking on each of these options is as follows:

1. General, Driver, Resources.

2. General, Driver, Resources.

3. General, Settings, Driver, Resources.

Under the Settings tab for #3, I have a drop-down menu titled "Dual IDE Channel Settings" which is currently set at "Default." The following options appear in the drop-down menu:

a. Both IDE Channels enabled.
b. Only Primary IDE channel enabled.
c. Only Secondary IDE channel enabled.
d. No IDE channels enabled.

Any ideas where to turn now?
