Talk Hi! I'm a newb to SuSE Linux 8.1 Pro... and I have some Qs

Hi! I'm new to SuSE Linux 8.1 Proffessional, and all Linuxes for that matter. Though I am completely new to the Linux world- I have done extensive subject on the subject... truth is it feels just like home.

I mean I didn't even read the manual to take it over and use it- it was so fun and easy. And it has a resemblence to my Win Xp Pro (though SuSE is much better)

I was just wondering... the screen seems somewhat small.. and I was wondering if there was any way to increase the resolution... I went to the YaST2 Panel and to the monitors section and played around with the "Geometry" part (the screen blanked out a few times since the screen didn't support such settings, but I restarted a few times a got through it)- it slightly improved, but not really that much, is there anyway to change the resolution by a huge amount? (BTW: My monitor isn't recognized by Linux- but it works fine)

Thing is- its probably my only problem... I mean everything is great- but I have to move windows like crazy just to see- and some things I can't see at all!

Thanks- I would really appreciate any help and advice you all coul give me :P

Well you can edit your XF86Config file, in Section "Screen" -> Subsection "Modes" just add here the resolution you want to chage it to. Restart the X server and you are done . Hope this helps .

Do you mean the actual size of the screen is too small or the resolution is too small?
Have you tried adjusting the screen size using the controls on your monitor? What model of monitor do you have?
You may need to find the correct refresh rates of your monitor and change them in SaX2.Does SaX2 list the monitor as VESA?It could have just picked a safe refresh rate range so to avoid screwing up the monitor.
What is the default resolution? You can change them as a test by pressing Ctrl_Alt_+/- on the numerical keypad.
If the screen blacks out press Ctrl-Alt-Backspace to restart the Xserver-no need to reboot.
HTH

Some people have had problems with laptop display panels. I found a thread here:

that may help you.

Tell us what hardware you have -do you have an Nvidia or ATI video card? It may be that you would get better results using a proprietary driver.

BTW -what is your location?
