Mirror Image

I upgraded my hard drive and would like to use my the old drive as a back-up. I’d like it to be a mirror image of each other ….. anyway, I’ve looked at several software programs (Norton’s Ghost, etc.), but don’t want to fork over the $70.

Can I do the old *.* … na! wouldn’t get the system stuff. Know of a better way or cheaper software that works?

Ghost is the best and easiest to use.

You can get it dirt cheap too

like here http://www.eastoutlet.com/shopping/shopexd.asp?id=481

or http://www.saveateagle.com/symnorsyspro.html

Those are Norton System works deals..which have ghost included.

Ghost is like my number one tool...it has saved me sooooooo much headache and time....I would have paid lot$$$ for it even if I didnt get it for...well, nevermind, lol.

Do yourself a favor..get ghost..learn to use it (very simple)

Dont even try Amatuer junk like *.*

There probably are some freeware things out there....but $9 plus shipping should be within your means.

Thx for the info... when you buy in this form (System Works) is there a separate disk for ghost... or can you select to just install ghost... I have newer anit-virus etc. don't want to mess it up

Well you can install only the pieces you want..if you look a while you can find ghost only I am sure..for as cheap or cheaper.

The only catch with systemworks is you get an icon in the system tray but you can disable that.

Or what you could do is just install it on another machine and then just make the ghost boot floppies, cuz that is what you want after all.

John.. not quite sure what you ment re: other machine, I want two hard drives in my home unit... one for day2day stuff, other for backup. Then if primary drive goes belly-up, I can change boot sequence in bios and boot from secondary drive. Is OK? Will work?

Anyway, thanks.. I just ordered System Works as you suggested... is it here yet?

No, I was just saying IF you have another computer sitting around..you could install the Norton systemworks on IT...and then from that other computer you would use systemworks to make the ghost boot floppies. Get it?

When you go to make an image of your hard drive..what you do is use the boot floppies...you boot off of the floppies and the imaging part runs from there...its easy...you just choose "drive to drive" if you want to put your image on another drive...or if you have a cd burner..you can choose "drive to image" and then you point it to your cdburner and it tells you how many cd's it will take....and then if you want to restore that image you boot off the floppies again and choose "restore from image" or "drive--FROM image" or whatever it is.

Keeping the other drive in the machine will work, I guess...I usually just have a seperate drive sitting around..that way if a lightning strike gets the machine, it wont get BOTH drives...or a wicked virus or whatever.

Images are ok for backups but not really day to day stuff.

You could probably make an image..set it aside..then use some other backup means to track the day to day changes such as new emails saved, new documents saved etc....then maybe in a couple weeks, go ahead and make a new image and start over with the day to day backups etc.

External drives come in handy there.
