Systems Loading, yet shutting down.

Hey everyone. I am new here and it looks like there are a lot of people on here so I thought I would see if anyone could figure out my problem.

I just built a computer and I have it all ready to install Windows XP. However I have two issues when I turn it on and try and load the operating system. The first issue is when I turn the computer on and after it loadeds the CD-ROM, HD, ZIP and Digi Drive it says, FLOPPY DISK FAIL, it asks to press F1 to contiue or delete to enter BIOS. I have just been pushing F1 thinking I can fix that once my operating system is installed. I would just uninstall it in Windows and let it reinstall that.

The second issue is when I get to the blue screen when I am trying to load XP. After it cycles through all the information that it is setting up it brings up this message, an unexpected error (32768) occured at line 5152 in d:\xpspl\base\boot\setup\setup.c.

Then it says to press any key to continue and then it just shuts down. I have no idea what it means and I don't know what to do because I can't get past the screen that says would you like to install, fix or just exit XP install. Thanks for any help that could fix this issue and I can't wait to learn more from this place.

welcome to TechIMO! first of all uninstalling the floppy in windows would accomplish nothing because you are having a problem before an operating system is loading your issue is the hardware

enter the bios and make sure that a 3.5 floppy is actually selected, most likely there is a setting to seek floppy drive on bootup that can be disabled. if the correct drive is selected then check the cabling it is either backwards (light is on all the time) or only on some of the pins. if this is not the case suspect the drive itself

a lot of errors on xp setup where you get a blue screen are because of memory. could just be the particular brand or something is wrong with it. try substituing another stick if available

edit

while in bios set the board for default settings until setup is complete. could also be caused by aggressive memory settings

Okay, I got the floppy issue fixed. Thanks. But I don't have any more memory. It is brand new from Crucial so I don't understand how the memory could have anything to do with the error that it keeps telling me. I have some old memory that is about 5 or 6 years old. I could try that but I am wondering if there is something wrong with the XP CD or the HD or something too. Again thanks for your help.

Okay, I checked out my old RAM and none of it will work on the MB I have. I went to Best Buy and they just sort of looked at me like I was an idiot, which is a possibility, but I would really like to fix this. There has to be a solution and I will sleep a lot over this.

Best guess is your install issue is RAM-related.

More info would help:
What motherboard brand and model, and exactly what RAM brand and model are you trying to use?
What bus speed are you trying to run at? (You may be trying to run too fast for what the ram can handle at ceertain RAM timing settings).
WinXP is sensitive to RAM quality.

Since your floppy drive is now functional, you could also download memtest86 and run memory error test on your RAM, independent of, and prior to, installing XP. Memtest86 runs from a floppy.

Hey, thanks for the reply. This is a quick run down of what I have...

MB - ASUS A7N8X
RAM - Crucial PC2700 DDR DIMMS
Processor - AMD XP 2400+
Video Card - ATI Radeon 9200
HD - WD 120gigs
Power - RAIDMAX 400 Watt
Sony CD-RW
Windows XP Home edition
I am not sure how to tell what the bus speed is

I hope that is enough information. I really appreciate all of your help.

Thanks - Brian

how many sticks of 2700.
If you are running dual channel, high quality mem is even more important. Most people will say you need matched pairs for dual channel operation. I have had corsair that wasn't matched work fine.
Your mem should run the same speed as your main bus on those boards.

If you haven't overclocker your 2400+ runs at 266mhz and your 2400 mem runs at I think 300mhz. every thing I have read says you should be running 266mhz mem. You can underclock your mem to 266 and see if that works
