Setting up an FTP Server using Windows XP & a Netgear DG814 Router

Please help me I'm close to pulling my hair out!

I want to setup an FTP server on my Windows XP PC which is on an internal network via a Netgear DG814 Router.

I am using the free FTP Server GuildFTP.

I have setup my router to forward ports 20 through 30 to my internal IP address (192.168.0.2). I have also ensured that I have disabled the routers in built security of not allowing Internet Pings. Also I have disabled Win XP firewall. I've set up GuildFTP to be in passive mode, using the IP address of the Router. I've set up a username and password for a friend. He can ping my router, but gets the message 'Connection Refused' when he tries to connect through his FTP Client.

I'm now confused, is it the router not forwarding the FTP traffic? or is it Windows XP refusing the request? or have not configured GuildFTP correctly.

My friend has succesfully configured his PC as an FTP server using GuildFTP and Win XP, but he has a different router to me. He's talked me through his setup and I'm pretty sure I've mirrored it. Where am I going wrong!?!?!?!

Any advice will be much appreciated!

Sounds like you have a firewall on the XP box. I think if your buddy can ping the ftp server from the Internet then the router is working okay.

Can you access the ftp server from another node inside the LAN (e.g. from 192.168.0.X can you ftp into 192.168.0.2) or is the connection still refused?

ok after playing around I got it to work by using the approach adopted by Disk Golfer at the top of this forum.

I'd prefer to use GuildFTP thou as it seems easier!

okay, glad you got something to work; keep in mind if the connection is refused from another node on the same LAN segment then the problem is not the router
