Which video card?

which video card is recommended for the following application use:

Photoshop 7
Illustrator 9
Acrobat 6

No gaming.

going to be using large files.
going to have an Athlon 2800 Barton and 1 GB ram.

I'm alo planning on building another computer for my father that will be for the same use except this one will need to be able to scan negatives and deal with a large number of picture files that will be large in MB size.

again, I dont think I'll be using them for gaming that much but I was just wondering what would work well for these uses.

thanks.

I would like to know this myself. Do any of those programs depend on video card memory or system memory?

the ati 9500 pro is pretty sweet, and its around $150. It all depends on how much you want to spend. For under $80, try a geforce 4 mx 440, they're standard in most hp's, sony's, compaqs, etc. For higher priced cards, like $300+, the ati 9800 pro is sweet, as is the nvidia 5900/ 5900 ultra. For a super lot, you could get a workstation card (quadro) by nvidia, whick is easily in the 500's, minimum

Video card I dont think really affects image editing all that much (at least on a non-professional level). I'd just get the ti4200, 128MB version. Very good card for the money imo.

i believe that most would agree that a relatively new MATROX card will produce the best 2D images of any that are out there.

Perhaps RobRich can specify what will be the best for you, i don't keep up with matrox.

yea, if u are going to be doing rendering and workstationi kind of graphics, u might want to get a matrox card(128mb +) or the ati fire or nVidia quadro fx... these are some fancy workstation cards and offer better productivity accessories and such (dual dvi, etc) but any of the high end ati cards would do fine (9600 pro and above)

the 9500 pro outperforms the 9600 pro, but a ti4200 or ti4600 would be a good choice

My set up for basically the same purpose is as follows:

XP 2500+ Barton oced to 3000+
1gig ram
Ti 4200 128mb ram... Oced (I don’t know the stats)

The gfx card isn’t dx9 compatible though...

I also find it useful to run windows 2k3 and another OS dual booted... One OS for surfing and what ever and the other the 2k2 install (very stable reliable OS not bloated with MSofts 'user friendly crap') for designing and use of your graphics software...

VGA VPU speed isn't an issue here.
ANY card , say an ATI 7000 @ about $60 USD would be just fine , I used an old nVidia Riva128 (Viper330 Diamond) 4MB for video editing , and I still have it -- in case I decide to start doing it again !!!!
