Slow Hard Drive....Well, Sometimes...

PC is a Pentium 4, 256MB RAM, Windows 2000.

The PC is fine when loading software programs, etc. It is ridiculously slow when trying to access the hard drive in Windows Explorer or when saving a file. Anytime you click on the the c drive in the tree it takes about 30 seconds to find the files.

Any ideas?

When was the last time you defragmented it?

When was the last time you scanned for viruses and spyware?

How much memory is being used?

Access to explorer can be slow if your network properties are goofed up.

1) Is DMA enabled for the drive?
2) Does your event log have any disk related errors?
3) Are you running any anti-virus software?
4) Do your processor and memory loads look normal?
5) Has the machine aways done this or is it a recent problem?
6) Do any other applications have a problem?

Regards
