Need a linux distro suggestion.

I'm looking for a small linux disto, that includes compilers and such to compile kernels. It doens't need to include X. Just something that has GCC and some other compilers and that is less than a 250MB download. Any suggestions?

Have you reviewed Distrowatch for CD based distros?
Some of the business card distros include compiling capabilities....

Try looking into Damn Small Linux, LNX-BBC, and DemoLinux - all offer gcc 2.95.3 or better in their live CD, but DemoLinux is possibly dead project.

Then, just mount your local hard disc and save your work, no install needed.

Damn Small Linux looks like it may be for you. Do you know much about Linux? If you have some experience, a debian net install may be for you.

That way you only get the stuff you want, and get apt-get for more stuff later if you want that.

Same here.
Another thought I had. If you're just after a Linux system for compiling on, then maybe zipslack will do you. it installs onto a FAT partition, using UMSDOS. This makes the filesystem a bit slower, but its fully functional and is only a 45mb download.
