Wireless Network Between 2 houses

Hey, I'm relatively new to networking and I'm wondering wether Wireless networking would be able to transmit to and from my house to a mates house who lives less then 100m away without the use of large antennas etc.

I've been browsing the net and i have found this product

Belkin F5D7000uk 54Mbps Wireless PCI Adapter

and the information about it can be found here:

http://www.broadbandbuyer.co.uk/Shop...&ProductID=503

Would this be suitable for even 1mb/s transfer rate between 2 houses? any information regarding this issue is appreciated, thanks guys

I would believe so. I work for a school and they have a second building that is seperated by a drive way. The distance across is maybe 50-75 feet at most. We use two wireless cards similar to the ones you are using to bridge the distance. With it being 54mhz, I would believe you could do it. All you can do is try. If it works, great, if not, try something else. If it doesn't work with just two wireless cards, trying buying an inexpensive WAP, such as one from Netgear. You put it on an inside wall nearest your neighbors, and it will act like a repeater, giving you a better range. Hope this helps ~ Nick

do you have a a clear line of site to your neighbors?

100m is 300 feet correct?

alot of problems you will run into is interference from other electronics and material. i.e your walls.

I agree. My bridge currently passes through 2 brick walls and a heating utility room (think a lot of metal) and it does ok. I am at somewhere around 60%, which is stable enough for most applications.

No I would'nt say there is a direct line of sight, there are corners of a few buildings in the way, is there any other information you can give me on this wap thingy, exactly what it does, what it needs, what it costs and possibly a link.

Also how about 3 houses arranged in a triangle?

Cheers guys uve been most helpful.

Ok, Here's what I suggest. Get a WAP such as this one. You put this in the most central location. Configure the WAP with an ip address of something like 10.85.1.1. Then add your wireless cards to each computer. Assign each of the cards a 10.85.1.X address. On wireless networks, there is also a name for the network that you will need to match on all of the wireless products. You can do this with both your neighbors if you would like. Just be careful, because the WAP I suggested doesn't have very high encryption/security.
