Win98Se headaches

I have a used mobo that will not let me install win98se on it windows server 2003 won't install either

I am getting errors during installation process,
Error loading USER.exe
Error loading GDI.exe
this occurs after setup does check and formats then begins to initialize and copy files
I am booting from cd rom and for some reason my floppy won't work the light stays on but it doesn't growl, none i have tried will work they all do the same thing....
win2003 gives error filesetupdd.sys could not be loaded error code 7
So that rules out the disks,
tried different cd roms all the same results...
I even tried insatlling WIN98 on the hard rive on a different computer and then installing the drive on this mobo..
I get windows protection errors prompting me to restart
I can get in to the command prompt only and step by step confirmation
step by step restarts after loading mouse drivers,
under command prompt only the best i can do is edit and open the files but they are encrypted i guess because it is all greek to me, Its not legible-
Any ideas on how I amight install OS on this board Here is a link to the specs and mobo type
http://www.itox.com/pages/products/m...0/G370if10.cfm
This board has a 40 gb seagate a p3 733 and 162 mb sdram

IS it possible that the bios needs updated?

This Would be The case if I could install Linux or WIN 95 right ?

I am going to try Red hat 6.2 on a different drive and see how that fares but with out a floppy it'll be tough to really tell if it is fully functional...anyhow I'll let you know how that goes, in the meantime any thoughts on win98se would be great....
Tahnks for your time and effort in responding....

Regarding Win98se;

The mobo should not be the problem, as it is win 95/98 compatable.

However the problem with the floppy may be the big indicator. Can you swap floppie drives with your working system? That would give us a heads up regarding the "defective" floppy, and let us test a known working floppy in the problem system.

Have you reset the BIOS via the jumper? Maybe just clearing the old data will help...

Luck!

Is the FDD light one continously? If so, you probably have the cable on wrong.

Yeah, usually if the floppy light stays on the cable is plugged in wrong.

Is the system overclocked? I had some problems getting windows to load on a system that was overclocked a couple of times.
And yes turn the floppy cable around,or upside down actually

May be the boot virus scanner in your bios that's giving you installation problems. Disable it.

I've reversed the floppy cable on the mobo end once.... and the cable could be offset by one step on the floppy drive as well.

Also, try clearing the CMOS before flashing it. I've had several systems that somehow got themselves into a tizzy, and clearing the CMOS was the only solution. Would last until I repeated some setup options that were not appropriate.

The mainboard is not the problem.

You have the ribbon cable reversed. Turn it over at the drive end and/or be sure none of the pins are bent, broken off or the cable was aligned one pin-set to the right or left

win2003 gives error filesetupdd.sys could not be loaded error code 7 So that rules out the disks,

I even tried insatlling WIN98 on the hard rive on a different computer and then installing the drive on this mobo..

If by some chance the "other" computer recognizes the full 40 gigs, and loads Win98...then you place that drive back in your system...which does not recognize the full 40 gb, then it will never work.

I get windows protection errors prompting me to restart
I can get in to the command prompt only and step by step confirmation step by step restarts after loading mouse drivers,

Did you format the drive?.. Win98 and above require fat32 (I think ) When you run fdisk with a Win98 created diskette, you will have an option for fat (16) or Large (fat32) choose fat32. If the drive was setup with an older win95 fdisk and format, fat16 was the type used..no options for fat32.

If the motherboard is too old, it would not recognise a 40 gb hard drive. If it is recognizing the full 40 gig in fdisk, I would think it is ok.

This Would be The case if I could install Linux or WIN 95 right ?

Depends on how (if) the drive is recognized setup and formatted

How much ram do you have? Win 98 is limited to 512mb. Just a thought. Just throwing in my $0.03.

Ram is 162mb approx. and the 40 gb is recognized fine so that rules out the bios thoughi may flash it anyway after install...
The Battery probably could use changed and as far as i know the processor is not overclocked... It says 733/256/133/1.7 on the chip but I did have to adjust the processors settings at post because it was reading the chip as a p3 550e, so i guess the cpu would technically be overclocked- the first time install the cpu it detected with the right settings but there was insufficient ram to detect ides quickly and i couldn't navigate in the bios, cleared Cmos to get ides detected quickly but the cpu was at 550e so i had to adjust it as per the message at post basically because the cmos had been cleared and the defaults were loaded...I upped the ram and no more issues with bios or post lagging/freezing...
THE FLOPPY CABLE IS DEFINITELY ON WRONG BECAUSE THE LIGHT IS ALWAYS ON I HAVE 4 to try with ...
We'll see how goes it...post back accordingly thanks for everything guys I really appreciate your time and effort in responding.
