the primary and secondary i think they were called?

Think of a disk as a whole pie and pie sliced into pieces..

pie = 1 hard disk
pieces = partitions

Each partiton will appear as a drive with drive a letter as you would see with 1 hole hard disk...

If that's the case, Primary controller can have 2 IDE devices and Secondary Controller can have 2 IDE Devices also totaling 4 devices combined.

Each controller has Master and Slave.

You can think if these as IDs for each device... Nothing more....
