Framebuffer X - What is this?

Can someone explain to me what a Framebuffer X is?

What is this and what is it used for?

The framebuffer is the area of memory on your video card which holds the current frame being displayed. Hence the name frame-buffer.
In Linux it is possible to use a Framebuffer device, which allows software to directly access this video framebuffer. I'm not quite sure what you're reffering to by framebuffer X. Do you mean directfb? This is just a driver for X to run using these devices, looks good atm, but I'm not sure how it performs myself.
