Asus A7N8X and RAM

I'm going to get some RAM when I order my mobo (not the deluxe or the -X model). I'm getting PC2100 since I have an old processor (I'll upgrade after tax money comes in) and the FSBs match. My question is this: what brands of RAM should I stay away from?

Hi Gerald,

Can't really tell you which ones not to buy except to stay away from generics.

I have used PNY for sdram and use Kinston Technologies for ddr dram. They have lifetime warranties and I have never had any go bad on me.

I've never used them but a lot of folks here swear by Crucial, Corsair, and Mushkin. I understand they also have lifetime warranties.

Hope this is of some help..
Gerry

I have the deluxe version and use Crucial PC3200 256mb (for now) but my system has been running rock solid.

Keep in mind that once you've upgraded the CPU, that PC2100 will become a limiting factor. In the long run it'd be better to get PC3200 now, which will work fine (and at the proper FSB) with your current older CPU and still provide some headroom for overclocking, for instance, a new Athlon XP 2500+. That way you won't have to upgrade the ram as well when you upgrade the CPU.

Stay away from generic or 3rd party chips like Spectek, Infineon, Micron OEM, etc. and stick with the name brands mentioned in other replies and you'll do ok. I'm using OCZ PC3200 with an overclocked Athlon XP 2200+ and have had no problems with it.

Thanks for the input guys, I was thinking of going with Crucial, as they have a good reputation. For right now I'm going to just upgrade a little( the PC2100) then around the beginning of the year I plan on getting a new processor and new ram.

JohnE,

ya might wanna check yer list of "generic" ram there.

I wouldn't call Micron a generic brand, they have top quality ram which will overclock very nicely.

If I'm not mistaken, Crucial is a daughterbrand to Micron, someone correct me if I'm wrong.

Stick yer neck out, name some names and yer bound to step on a few toes, lol. I just thought of 2 off the top of my head that I would personally avoid... maybe Micron isn't the company I was thinking of.

Your correct Ultima, Crucial is made by Micron. However,

The OEM Micron memory is manufactured by a third party. Only the memory chips come from Micron. Crucial RAM is memory modules that are fully manufactured and tested by Micron themselves.
Source: NCIX. Genuine Micron might be fine but I would definately stay away from Micron OEM.
