estimation...

well maybe the files you copied in was heavy. Hows your RAMs? maybe also that your cpu processor, mighty p4, gets a little bit hotter than normal. When that happens, it'll eventually greatly slow down your entire system...
your computer takes a lot of juice in copying stuff I see..your specs are fine though, but after I scan/analyze my drive C:, and then defrag, all turn up fine and smooth at anything...

Perhaps antivir is trying to scan all the files on the way to your hd?

I experienced massive system lag yesterday (though I do NOT have antivir) when I downloaded (via ftp) 9gb of files from my main computer to a laptop. Internet connectivity got cut off, and halo went 1fps

Roger that, antivirus, can take to much CPU and memory.

Make sure that DMA is enabled for both your HD and CD drive. Also check if any anti-virus software is running real time protecton.

Regards

That too!
If pio mode is enabled for either hard drive, cpu usage will go to 100 and the transfer is slow as ????.

Try disabling the anti-virus software and trying again, only way to be sure it isn't causing the issue. I know that real time file protect completely kills the IO performance on my file servers at work (and thats on machines that are probably quite a bit more powerful).

Is DMA enabled for the CD drive if you are using that as a source?

Are the HD and CD-ROM drive in question both on the same cable? You'll get faster/more efficient file transfer (less cpu intensive) if the drives involved are on different IDE channels.
