Kids Trouble with new sound card

I am running Win98SE.
My onboard sound card recently died, so I bought a new PCI sound card to replace it. The new sound card is a C-Media CMI8738 4-channel PCI Sound Card.
My computer picked it up and I installed the drivers as per normal. However I have a problem.

My new sound card is not in the preferred device list in Multimedia Properties, so obviously i cannot select it as the preferred device and it doesn't produce any sound. My new sound card is listed on the Device tab of multimedia properties. It is also listed in system properties and the computer says it is working fine.

I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling, and the speakers are working correctly.
Some advice would be much appreciated. Thanks.

did you un-install the previous drivers? I would make sure you have un-installed the old drivers completely to free up your resources(IRQ & I/O ports) in Windows98. Then reboot to the BIOS and disable the onboard sound there. Then boot to Win98 again and install your new HW & drivers.

yeah, if it was onboard sound you will probably have to go into the bios and turn it off.

There should be a setting for "onboard audio" or if its more modern it might say "ac 97 audio"..make sure its off.

Just for curiousity sake, if you look in device manager (system properties) do you still see the old audio stuff? If you highlight "computer" and click "properties" and then click "IRQ" do you see that your new audio card has the same number IRQ listed as some other device has? (both with 5 listed for example)

It may just be a matter of making sure the old audio stuff is disabled in the bios first. And then if that doesnt do it, uninstall and reinstall the new card.

If Skit's suggestion doesn't work. You may want to check if the digital output is checked on the sound card settings. If it is then uncheck it.

I know that I have made that same mistake couple of times leading to several minutes of head scratching.

good luck
