cannot display page error for google pages only

I am having a very strange problem that I have never run into before. Whenever I try to get to a page that is part of google (or get the results of a web search that uses google) I get the error page saying Cannot display page. I use IE most of the time but have tried this with opera and still get the same error. The other computer on my small home network can access the pages fine.

I have check my internet setting to make sure I did not block the domain somehow, and have tried different security setting. I use Win XP and have tried to restore to a point before this started happening and have had no luck.

Any suggestions?

Here's a similar problem with the possible solutions that I posted, but he ended up doing a total reformat and reinstall to clear up the problem

Well, it appears I do have hijacked dns with a program/site called new.net I have tried to use hijackfree to delete it, but no luck. Anyother ideas?
Adaware did not remove it.

Found some new info about the hosts file. I fixed the problem now. If anyone needs the same help or wants more info, let me know. Thanks for help all!
