I would say a Mach II cooling case, with a 400-500W PS.
The I guess I would go with either a P4 3.2 gig system or a 3200+ XP and oc them to the extreme. Then go with 1 gig of dual channel DDR Ram. Then get a Raptor for the OS, a 160 gig Maxtor for saves, a decent CD-Rom, ATI Radeon Pro, Audigy II Platinum sound, throw in a decent NIC, and maybe add a Cenatek Rocket Drive with the max 4 gig config.
With that you have to have a high quality speaker system from either Logitec or Klips.
A 21" Plasma and a 21" Flat CRT Sony (not sure which would be better, I guess the CRT for gaming)
I might be missing some thing from this, but this should run in the $5-$7K range (w/o the ram drive) mainly because of the monitor option and the Mach II system.

Xeon is a waste. Clock wise slower then the P4, plus it is meant for server ops which is alot of background tasks, what you want is something that is fast, and optimized for single applications.

i thought that not that many programs are geared toward dual processors. i heard you wouldn't be able to really use the true power of the dual processors because you only split the use evenly between the two processors, that's what i heard anywayz.

thanx,
<shad> | IMO, a dual boot W98se/WinXP Pro offers the best. Assuming you have the horsepower and ram, use XP for any game that will run on it, and W98se for any game that doesn't like W2K/XP, or requires hardware drivers that are W9x flavor. Also, my experience is cetai9n DOS just run better under W98se than even "compatability" mode under XP... also sound is usually easier to configure for DOS games under W98se.

every part.. top-of-the-line | AMD Athlon 64 FX51, best 64 bit, socket 947 mobo out this week, with either serial ATA or (real) SCSI controller, 1gb (or more) of the fastest available dual channel ram, top of the line ATI 9800 or nVidia (toss up right now), if SCSI, set up 4x15Krpm SCSI drives in Raid-0+1 array, broadband (cable or DSL, whatever is best in your area), DVD-RW, CD-RW... water- or TEM-cooled CPU, GPU, chipset too if need be... figure $5K+ ought to cover it.
PS: next month something will be faster and more powerful
