did you specifically ask them if they block that port? i know verizon does.

are you trying to set up a web server? you can use a port redirector or webhop like www.dyndns.com and have requests to yourdomainname.com go to youripaddress:8080

Well, I just got finish talking to them and a different tech told me the total opposite. He says it can be a violation of my contract if i set up a WebServer on a home dsl line. I was told I need to talk to a sales rep and see exactly what I can do with my line. He also said that I might need to get a business DSL line to setup a WebServer also a Static IP.

At one point, they were advertising that if you purchased their Static IP package, you could setup a webserver, FTP, etc . . .

I don't see it in their description now though.

Do you still have the WebServer running? If so which DSL do you have and do you have a static IP?

I have bellsouth home DSL with a dynamic IP, and just recently set up a webserver. Which runs perfectly fine with the dyndns.org service. When my I.P. changes there is a downtime of maybe 5 mins. before the DNS record is refreshed. Also it is being forwarded to port 80, So, no bellsouth does not block it.

Did you ask them if is was okay to set it up on your DSL. What WebServer are you using and how many times a day does your IP refresh. BellSouth is asking 15 bucks a month to have a static IP, and I just think that is crazy to pay that much. Also is dyndns.org free?

I did not ask Bellsouth for permission to host a webserver on my line. I just went ahead and put it up.
I usually keep the same I.P. for a week or more. Unless I force it to change by powering off the modem.
Dyndns.org has a free and a pay service. If you want to use a registered domain name I think they charge you $25 a year. Or you can use the free Yourname@dyndns .com etc... they have a pretty good variety of domain names to choose from. I am running a Windows 2000 webserver. Basically with the dns service I have a app running as a service that monitors the I.P. address on my server. If it changes it automatically updates the information for my account with dyndns.org.
