High resolution in display will not save

On rebooting I have to reset resolution each time to go from 8 bit to 32 bit. Win XP. Perhaps latest drivers(Nvidia GEForce4) will help, but always worked OK before. Pete

Are your video card and monitor both identified correctly in device manager?

What card do you have?

It shouldn't reset on booting.

I have nvidiaGeforce4 MX440 withAGP8X.

I thought i was onto something when after reading osprey's monitor id tip, i found out that I had 2 monitors: plug&play and default. the p&p one had no drivers, which i installed. Made no difference! I have reduced acceleration, loaded latest drivers, cleared write combining, reduced refresh rate, reduced icon dpi size etc. But should there be 2 monitors in device manager? I await replies. Pete

Is this an AGP card with dual VGA outlets? If so, two monitors will show up in the device manager.

Also, did you load the Nvidia Desktop manager software the came with the card?

I use dual monitors with that card, a generic profile loaded in the desktop manager, and can change resolution in the display properties window, no problem.

Make sure you have the correct monitor selected as your primary monitor.

Hi DD.PC came pre-installed. I have only VGA card driver. I have re-installed PC but not installed from discas far as i can remember. i also do not knowfor sure about 2 VGA outlets, but there's nothing in motherboard booklet except: 1 Universal AGP slot supports 3.3v/1.5v4X/2X/1X AGP card. There's also nothing on system information app 'fresh diagnose' that suggests that i have 2 outlets.

Might be helpful to post your mobo specs, and the video card specs/brand.

I think Windows XP is detecting two ramdacs (graphical processing units), so you may be dual monitor capable. Just see if you have two jacks on the back, either one onboard, (the mobo I/O jacks) and one on the vid card, or two jacks on the video card itself.

Past my bedtime, wish I could help more. You might try logging on and running

Belarc Advisor

and post your system specs for more help.

I think you just have a conflict with the software, causing the default resolutions to load each time you boot up.

GeForce4 Card features

All it says in specs is that it allows for multiple config of CRT&Digital Flat panels: There is not a similar type connection on that slot, only a PS2 type next to it. Pete

For what it's worth. I cannot(normally) get html links to function. Like the 'to' in Yahoo mail or post in MS help. I get a short blast of sound and nothing! Pete

I seem to have solved99% of the problem: I merely set the colour quality in Safe Mode the resolution then adjusted itself to highest when back in normal mode. Just one thing. I have a approx 2" roughly square, of blanked-out screen on desktop when i reboot. Need to get rid of that now. Also find out if other problems with links are resolved
