Internet Explorer - Can't open next window

Hi Everyone,
I'm new and hoping someone has some advice. I've searched everywhere. I have an AMDAthlon 2000+, WinXPHome, 512 ram, (2) 80 gig h.d's. Cable internet (with router);

Everything has been running fine but just recently when I click on a link in an email or on a link contained on a web page, internet explorer just starts to open a new window and then just hangs - it doesn't show the destination address, just i.e. at the top and nothing happens.......... I can bring up a page if I type in the address tho. I've tried patches and updates (when I am able to download), I've eliminated any spyware, I have Norton anti virus running, I've tried every fix I can find. Does anyone have any ideas? I really appreciate it! Thanks,

Cali
