CD-RW (Trouble reading discs)

I have an IDE Creative CD-RW RW1012E which goes crazy when given certain CD-Rs, even if they were written on the same drive (sometimes won't read them, sometimes will lock up the system, sometimes just keeps reading forever, etc...). Anyone know what I might try to remedy this situation? I've searched for a firmware upgrade but came up empty handed.

Clean the lens;
try a flawless CDR;
kill all other apps before trying to read or burn;
check the data and power cables.

Also, has your mouse ever multiple clicked when you pressed one time?
Which OS are you using?
