New house Networking ?'s

Hello All,
A friend of mine is building a new house, he is going to have a main pc an then 2 other's for his kids. He is running wiring at this time, should he run wire's to the kids room's or go with a wireless set-up to tie all of the PC's together for printer sharing ect.?
Thanks Gambill

I think wireless would be the way to go...

That way you can move the PCs anywhere in the house/room etc.

wireless is very nice for the people who dont want to have ugly cables everywhere

when deciding to get wireless or wired, you must consider the distance and if there will be alot of file sharing going on. I.e movies or music. Another factor is cost. wireless although getting cheaper the higher end stuff can cause a lump of money.

If he knows what he are doing I would go with wireless but, if he is new to networking I wouldn't go wireless because of security issues. Peeps that don't know how to set them up usually leave them so they can be easily hacked.

I use wired but, my network cables are all under the house so you don't see the cables.

If its a house that is not built yet, I would wire it, the whole thing. Have a port in each room, maybe two in the den or living room. Why not? Sure wireless is available, but not always reliable. It would not be sloppy since all cables would be in the walls. Its a no brainer in my book.

I would wire the house. You have a whole other security issue with wireless, and its more expensive, and I think it is still alot slower. You can get all the parts at home depot.

Also if you have a need for wireless for a laptop or something like that, you can add wireless on to your wired network later

Messe is right.

My wife and I just had a house built, and we had it wired with Cat 5 in every room. They terminate in wall jacks just like a phone line.

I put a Router in the basement that connects to the Cat 5, and now I've got Internet Access everywhere.

You can still plug in a WAP if you want Wireless access for a PDA or Laptop, but all of the PCs can have a faster, more secure Ethernet connection.

I also agree with Meese. wired is the way to go if it is new construction.

Food

Yup, wired is the way to go. Cheaper, faster, secure and more reliable. He should put in gigabit rated wiring that will also work with the 100 Megabits/sec of the current standard for at least a little future-proofing.
