Kids Linksys 3-port Print server

Hey all,

I have a Linksys 3-port print server running that is giving me some problems...

I got 2 laser printers hooked up to it and is on the network. Every couple of days, it seems to trip out, by that I mean that when I go through windows xp to check the status of the printer it tells me it can't find the printer or that the printer is offline.

Now I go to the utilities for the print server and I have it print a test page for both printers and it does. After the test print, the printers are working fine and there are no problems.

This happens every 3 or 4 days and now is just plain annoying as I would expect I shouldn't have to do this and it would run clean. Thanks.

-P

does it still say it is offline when it prints? are you saying it works fine, but it just says it is offline?

if your computers are set to go into sleep mode, this is not uncommon for network resources to be lost.

it could also just be taht the printers are turning themselve off, or sleeping after a period on idleness.

For most inexpensive printers, the Windows printer driver is not going to be able to return information on printers attached via a print server. You have to get that information using the print server's web interface.

That said, I have had a similar problem as you with my Dlink print server. It won't regain communication automatically with the printer if the printer is powered off and back on - I have to reset the print server.

In my case, however, I am sharing a single printer among two PCs in the same room. Since the printer has both parallel and USB ports, I have simply stopped using the print server and connected one PC over USB and the other over parallel.

Well, when I check the status through windows, it states that the printer is not found on the network, but when I go through the web based utility is sayes the printer is idle. I do a test print and everything is fine. I just wish I wouldn't have to do that.

Thanks.
