Post install problem

I helped a friend to install w2kpro on an Dell OptiPlex GX1 500L.
No problem w/install but there are a few annoying things:
1. After boot a screen shows up asking to select the OS and w2k is listed three times?!
2.Can't make the OS to install a SCSI card needed for his Umax Astra 1200s scanner!(the card was part of the umax package)
3.Can't get rid of the " it is now safe to turn of your computer" even after changing the
registry?

Any suggestion?

As for question 1:

Open the boot.ini with notepad. It is located at c:\boot.ini. Its a hidden file so you need to turn on "view hidden folders" to see it. A typical boot.ini looks like this:

[boot loader]
timeout=30
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINNT
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINNT="Microso ft Windows 2000 Professional" /fastdetect

Under [operating systems] should only be one line, if you have repetitive entries delete all but one.

As for question 2:

Does this SCSI card have jumpers for the Address and IRQ? Is it a PCI card or older ISA card?

As for question 3:

Don't know the answer

I got my ISA SCSI card to work with my SCSI scanner in W2K. Its sort of brute force. W2K will not automatically recognize the older card, so you first need to find out what Addresses and IRQ's can be used by your SCSI card, then find out what address and IRQ's your system is currently using. Then you need to strap the jumpers to an Address and IRQ not used by the system. Are there W2K drivers for this SCSI card? What is the model number and manufacturer of the card?

The card itself should have documentation describing this. Do you have the manual that came with the card? Or you may be able to get it from their website.

I think its total BS that they would charge you for drivers. Any company that does that is one that I'm not buying anything from. Are they trying to go out of business? Because thats whats going to happen if they charge for drivers when 99.9% of the companies out there supply the drivers for free.

This is from the website regarding the address and IRQ:

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
What resources does the card use?

The card requires a single free ISA slot, and an I/O address (base 220h - 340h, configurable in software). The card does not use an IRQ, DMA or COM resource. (Note: see later notes on installing as Plug & Play)

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Is the card Plug & Play?

No - however, the latest versions of the card (new RevA) include a "PNP / PNR" jumper -by default, this is set to Plug & Run. By changing the jumper setting to "PNP", Windows 95 should be able automatically detect the card and install drivers. The earlier RevB and RevA cards had a soldered link across J1, setting the card in PNR mode (although not recommended, this link could be removed to change to PNP).

My complaint as well:

http://www.techimo.com/forum/t81882.html

Here are the drivers for yuor Umax scanner:

http://www.umax.de/eu/index.htm for Ver. 3.1 Scanner

http://www.umax.de/eu/index.htm for Ver. 2.9 Scanner

I would think these are hardware version changes (above) ?

WB

Edit, the direct link to the drivers will not work, click on either link and you will find the drivers and the software at this Umax site.
