Video Card Questions
I'm looking to do video capture. I want a good card that doesn't export videos in a format like quicktime (crap) or a divx ;-( type AVI. I have a big hard disk, that's not a problem. Mostly ripping vhs tapes to disc, and then burning to vcd/svcd.
What video card do you recommend? BTW, I have a analog connector on my monitor. Some cards I looked at need a digital connector?
I also have this weird converter thing from belkin. It has a analog connection on one side, (like for a old monitor) and then a connector that looks like it would go into some of these cards I looked at. Could I use this for the analog>digital conversion?

A cheap way to do what you want to do is to get a hauppauge TV card which goes for less than $60... That's what I use... I use the Hauppauge model 401 to capture to AVI from video cam, VCR, TV, etc...

I've seen files before like a 200+- MB MPEG2 files, and then a MPEG4 that is about 80 mb. These are usually a pretty inferior quality. Does this get great captures? Do you have a demo video I can see? One last question: does fry's sell these cards?

Well, It's FRYday, and the paper will be out in a couple of hours with a six page ad. Both the hauppage and Leadtek, and a couple of others are available at FRY"S'
I bought the Leadtek 2000 Deluxe, and am very happy with it. The retail version is between 50 and 60 bucks, comes with Video Studio 7, COOL 3D, DVD Movie Factory 2, Winfast DVD titles, and a remote control.
Have not yet transferred VHS to MPEG, but the video quality and TV capture work great.
Read the reviews from NewEGG purchasers of both products while you are wainting for the paper.

Uncompressed and compressed depends on the software you will be using and the selection you make... Whatever codecs are installed on your system will be the available options...
As far as quality goes, it's pretty good as far as I can see compared to professional level cards such as MPEGator hardware cards which will run you over a grand. It just isn't as fast since it's not hardware.
I use MGI Videowave 5 with this card because I don't do anything professional level...
I get decent performance on this card because I'm running a dual Xeon 2.4Ghz 533FSB system. I also used to run this card on my Dual AMD MP2000+ system as well. I honestly can't say how it will run on a uni-processor system. However, I'm pretty sure it will run ok. I know Outpatient here in the forums runs a hauppauge card and he may be able to give you some feedback...
Yes, you can buy these at Fry's as well as CompUSA and other computer stores...
Pick one up yourself at Fry's and give it a shot. I don't think you will be disappointed at all. If you are, just return it for a full refund. That's the nice thing about Fry's...

Is there a place I can see a back picture of it? I'm curious about all the ports the card has. The maker's website doesn't show a detailed enough pictures of the all the connections. oh, and is it AGP or pci?

the leadtek is PCI probably better pics of each one on Newegg website. Just do a category search, bottom of the home page, for video capture,, its sorted by price,,, there is a "see It" listing one each picture, and a "read reviews" button, with the number of purchasers responding.
My favorite trick it to resort by rating, then read the reviews of the price range I'm looking for.
