Something's accessing my A: drive (floppy)

This started happening about 4 months ago. I thought my floppy drive was going kaput, so I disabled it. Recently I bought a new floppy and installed it. Everything was fine for about two days. Then all of a sudden something started trying to access it again (without a disk in it). When I put a disk in (to keep it from chattering) all it does is read it for about 3 seconds.

It also seems to react to Internet Explorer. I just realized when I click on a link, it accesses the drive. On TechTV's web site, when I go over a "Flash Roll over button", It accesses the drive. Well, I'm looking in Explorer's settings now...

Any Ideas?

Oh, wow.... That's very interesting... I've seen AV access FDD on starup and shutdown. Or oldr Windows versions where you left a floppy disk in the drive and you pulled it out during access it would continually seek on the FDD. However, not when accessing a web link through IE...

What Windows version you running?

have you ever downloaded movies? (you dont have to answer but if so read the following)
one of my friend's "friends" was bragging (about a year ago) that he downloaded a ton of movies, then would insert one of his "codes" they either make the processor run at 100% or the randomly access the A: drive... if so, you gotta find the movie, delete it, and hope it gets rid of it

Try saving a Notepad document. Just a blank will do. The Save in: panel will open and I bet it will open to the floppy. Change to another directory and save the file. It might be remembering a last failed Save action and is trying to repeat it.

Worth a try.

Cheers!

Boy this can get annoying quick!!! Windows XP Home. Notepad and wordpad both tried saving to my desktop. When I clicked file... it again accessed the floppy drive. Lots of things I do, does. When I click the Start menu -> All programs and then move into the programs, it does. Thanks tho Beemer.. that was a great guess... as for movies, I don't have any currently on this system. I have run spybot search and destroy - nothing, and Norton Antivirus (2003) - nothing... both are updated as of today.

My best James Kirk impression... Must Find Answer!

It does this when I:

When I click on a link (html)
When I select anything from the File, Edit, View, Favorites, etc.
When I mouse over any links that are "mouse over enabled"
Randomly (no specific time pattern)

Fixed!!! (sort of)

I have Norton Systemworks 2003 installed on the system. Disabling auto protect stops the A: drive from being accessed all the time.

It is a problem with the auto protect! I have tried changing every one of the options in config to no avail. I have sent a support request to NAV and hopefully they can help. I'll also post the response when I get it.

Thanks guys,
