Removing programs at start up

Hi everyone,

I had my computer worked on a few days ago and was taking with the tech about the computer seeming to be slow starting. He said to check whats being loaded at start up and remove what I don't want. How do I see whats being loaded and how do I remove them? If I remove them, do the programs still work from the start window if I want to use them? I don't want to disable them permanently, just stop them from loading.

Thanks.

Lisa

press start - run - and type "msconfig"

you should get a window where you can uncheck programs that start up.

Depends on what OS you have and the programs that are being loaded.

What OS do you have?

Some items are in the Start Menu. Click Start, Programs, and Startup. See what is in there. If you are running Win98 or higher you can right click on it and choose delete.

Other items are in the System Tray (lower right corner). Clicking (or sometimes right clicking) will pull up the options menu to disable each item.

Find out what is running there and see what you need to have running and what you can kill.

Ok, so it's XP.

XP does not use msconfig I think.

First check the Startup Folder and then the SysTray.

Ok thanks everyone. I did the start-run-msconfig thing and then clicked on the tab at the top that said start up. It's quite a list. I have 18 items there. I recognize 4. They have names like hpsysdrv and hkcmd. I don't know what these are and if its safe to remove them. I'll have to search for each file name first and try to figure out what program it goes too before removing them.

Thanks you all for helping.

Lisa

in msconfig there is selective startup and normal...if u click normal it all starts..u need to click selective and then unclick programs u recognize, and leave others. You can still use programs in start, programs, etc. Or go to explorer, find program and click .exe file to start and put icon on desktop
