FAT32 -=vs=- NTFS

Which is better and why is it better?

What makes it so much better in comparison to the other?

Why would I pick one or the other?

Is there any advantage/disadvantage to choosing one over the other?

Well. The main thing is that in order to use any of the fancy stuff on XP or W2000..you have to go with ntfs. By fancy stuff I mean..compression, encryption, dynamic disks and some or all of the security permissions etc.

A link http://www.ntfs.com/ntfs_vs_fat.htm

Another link (where the first link came from) http://users.pandora.be/educypedia/c.../memorymbr.htm

Also, ntfs stores another copy of the master boot record (mbr) besides the one at the first sector....to be honest, im not sure how to explain it, but it makes ntfs a little safer, lol. (In other words I dont know if ntfs heals itself if the first mbr gets corrupted or if we have to do it thru commands etc)

NTFS is the way to go.

Unless you like older technology and use windows 3.11 (WFWG).

Actually I dual boot offa Windows 98 and XP...

I use Fat32 for XP because I've broken XP plenty of times (on NTFS AND FAT32) and had no DOS prompt or way to get back into that stupid NTFS lockdown system to back up my data.

Now I'm paranoid and I'm using the lesser-tech Fat32 so I know I can save my ass from trusty old DOS with my command prompt...

Simple! Use Fat32 unless you know why you want to use NTFS!

There is little performance differences between the two, plus you can still read the drive with a Dos boot disk.

Send a message via AIM to DanU
If you are going to create files larger than 4GB, then you cannot use FAT32. Folks that do video capture and processing often recommend NTFS for this reason.

NTFS drives don't fragment as much.

If you have large number of small files, NTFS with small cluster size is better. Reduces slack.
