New linux Install Q's

first off. WOOOO. yeah finally installed linux again to the main box, as windows likes to crash alot. curently have red-hat 9 running up on here.
now on the the issues.
first my text has like colors going on on it. like it'll be black but them some have red bits and blue bits. i turned off AA and it fixed it for icons and stuff but like nothing else. any ideas?

the other one might just me have been stupid. last night i ran 2 live distros on here to see if everything would work before i resized my partition and stuff. that included mounting the ntfs drives. which either knoppix or slack live did. i dont remember but red-hat says it can't... i'm guessing there isn't a realllly easy way to deal with this?

ooo one other one just poped into my head. i think i read on here that mplayer can handle divx?
and how about this one. i'm going to look right now though. do i need to get drivers or something to make my live drive out puts work?

thanks bunches

RH9 should be able to mount NTFS with the mount command.

mount -t ntfs /dev/hdx /mnt/dir

Where x is the right partition number and dir is the directory you've created in /mnt. But it'll be read only.

well being able to just access would be helpful.
and i just tried that...
[root@localhost bobomega]# mount -t ntfs /dev/hda1 /mnt/c
mount: fs type ntfs not supported by kernel

and i think i might have solved the livedrive issue. not sure have to read more.

BobOmega, another peculiarity with RH9 is the fact that it doesn't ship with mp3 support due to a decision by Red Hat to withhold the capability due to legal issues.

Here is the link to the rpm's to enable mp3 support in xmms

apparently they don't ship with NTFS support either

http://linux-ntfs.sourceforge.net/info/redhat.html for installing it... I think that will work

Hm. Ximian must update the kernel to support NTFS. I knew RH8 didn't come with it, but was under the impression 9 did. My apologies.

w00t ok got ntfs support. so if i share my drives.. somehow. can i read/write from a windows box? or still read only?

how about being able to make the mount so someone other then root can open it. i get a nice you do not have enough premissions to access... type deal when i try to open it

NTSF support is read only... Mandrake 9.1 distro has been easier for me an it includes the 2.4.21 kernel, but Mandrake 9.2 is on the way in about 15 days or less... just if you dont like Red hat much... It play MP3 but I havent tried divx...

ok...

i can mount the ntfs's but i dont know how to set permissions or whatever i need so i can access them. i'd like to eventaully get samba up and running but i can live for now.

here is another one. how do i get the java plugin installed. i've been fiddling with it for almost an hour now. i thought i had netscape installed but i can't find it plus i like mozilla a bit better. but all the instrructions at java.com are saying netscape/plugins or a mozilla/plugins or whathaveyou and i can't find them if they exist for anything.

would maybe isntalling opera solve this?

but seriously i'm utterly confused with this whole install the plugin thing. i think it hates me.
