Kids What am I doing wrong ?

I recently had my mobo repaired. It's an Epox 8K7A. I figured that since I had it all apart, I might as well upgrade the CPU.
The old CPU was an AMD Athlon 950 ( I think).
The new one is an AMD T-Bird 1800 and after some hassles it is running, but I think not at max speed.
What I get at boot up is:
Unknown CPU
Speed 1.66 Ghz
133 MHZ x 12.5. 12.5 is the max mulitplier accordnig to the manual

How can I get a full 1800 ghz out of this beast if possible.

and did I remember to say thanks ??

Armadel.

Wait, it's an XP1800+, right? Not a straight Athlon 1800? I'm pretty dang sure they didn't go that fast back then.

Then it should only be running at 1.53Ghz!! XP chips don't actually go as fast as the number. It's more of a PR thing to say "We go as fast as a Pentium does at this speed." Your BIOS should be set to 133 x 11.5 for the correct speed for that chip.

You're going to have to overclock...in other words, bump up your FSB past 133 (since your multiplier is locked at 12.5) if you can. THe "Full" 1800Mhz that you're talking about is an overclocked speed, not the normal speed of the 1800 chip.

WARNING: Overclocking may fry your chip!

Here is a FAQ for the motherboard http://web.epox.com/html/motherboard...A32oO32r3R2o3J

some interesting stuff there.

have you updated to the latest bios?

And if you scroll down on this list, ftp://ftp.epox.com/motherboard/suppo...pu-support.pdf you see that your board is supposed to go to xp2200...so its probably that you need the latest BIOS flash.

Misc hahahahah

I saw the warning and noted it. I am not an overclocker so if the bios fix doesn't do it, I will stay where I am.
Did I ever tell you that I am a big chicken ..

thanks

hehe, I totally missed that. The AMD rating got me again.

A BIOS flash isnt needed in this case, cuz its already recognized the cpu correctly...right?

When you boot up it shows it as an xp1800 correct?
