Shuttle CPU support

Hi, I have repaired a Shuttle AK31V3.1a, an early version of this series board. It has been flashed to the latest BIOS AK31S40a.

I have a 1.3 GHz Duron (Morgan core?..I donno).

The PDF CPU file indicates up to an AMD Athlon XP 2100+, but only up to a 950 MHz Duron.

Am I missing something?.. Not being too versed with the Durons in general, but it seems to me that frequency is not the reason for non Duron support.

Any thoughts?.. anybody know the answer?..

Hi Bovon,

My guess is the manual just wansn't updated. If it can support a 2100+ XP, then chances are that Durons above 950MHz will work. The Morgan Durons (1.0 to 1.3GHz durons) didn't require anything special compared to the older durons. The only difference is the higher frequency results in higher current draw. But this shouldn't be a problem since the mobo can handle up to an XP 2100+.

BTW, how exactly did you "repair" your mobo. Just curious...

Since it says that it supports up to xp2100 then it must mean palominos. Durons 1ghz and up are palominos also.

Ahhh.. that must be it then. I have been exchanging emails with a Shuttle tech support guy, and he sent me the url to that pdf file...I was disappointed to see the low frequencies of Durons..and wrote him again to ask specifically about that, and he again sent me the url to the pdf file.

I was not aware that Durons 1 GHz and up would be considered Palominos.. I need to read up on the AMD processors after the Tbirds.. I have been out of the loop for about 2 years.

DanU, thanks for your thoughts as well.. I would think that frequency chart vs AMD processors is up to date if their tech support sent me the url twice!.. LOL.

On this particular board, a guy had attempted to flash the bios, and it died. He wanted to find a new home for it, so I grabbed it to experiment with.. thinking maybe I could reflash it if the boot block was still ok. Well, no amount of booting with an A: drive attached showed any signs of reading the disk in the drive, so I found someone that could flash a chip.. he had some extra chips, flashed one and mailed it to me. That fixed the board and it booted up good...so, I then hot swapped the old chip and reflashed it.. now I have two bios roms for a Shuttle mobo.

I thought at first that board might have some of the defective capacitors that have killed so many motherboards in the recent 2 years..but these seem to be ok (for now). I have replaced the capacitors in two boards successfully. I have a PC Chips board here now that I need caps for, but have been unable to find exact replacements...yet.
