ADSL Problem Connected but can't surf and progs won't connect

I use Bellsouth Fastaccess (have for about 2 years). I have a 733mhz, 256mb RAM, 2gigs free on windows drive, on a WinME system. I started having this problem a month and half ago with the 3com PCI and now have a Westell Wirespeed, I still have the problem with both USB and Ethernet connections.

All the lights are green, when I log into the service it says I'm connected, I can ping servers from the command prompt. I cannot open any web pages except one (www.something.com), and my programs won't connect (Yahoo Messenger, MSN, and WinMX) They try to connect but fail.

If I ping a server with up to 508 bytes of data it'll go through, but the larger the size the more packet loss I have (25% - 75%). And if I ping a server with 509 bytes or more I get 100% packet loss.

I've been on the phone with tech support almost daily for a month and a half and I've had a tech at my house and on my machine 5 times (6 times this coming Friday). All of my configuration is good and everything checks out fine.

Bellsouth has replaced my wall jack, ran a Homerun line to the outside box, checked the connection on the telephone poles on my street, and replaced the DSL card that I connect to at the local office.

The Bellsouth technician has the same problem if he tries to log on with his laptop, a brand new modem out of the box, and his account.

Resetting the port on the DSL card at the local office has sometimes given me service for 15mins - 2hours.

We've ran out of ideas, so if anybody else has any I would greatly appreciate it.

Thanks in advance,

Jim Davis

Not close to any microwaves. And my dsl worked fine sitting in this same spot for about 5 months. It just "went out" one day, it was still connected to the net but I couldn't pull any pages. One of the strangest things bellsouth has seen. Thanks for the input though, Never gonna find the problem without some fresh input

How about any new construction, lights, etc. in your neighborhood? Besides microwaves, other sources that can interfere include lamp dimmer switches, halogen lamps, (street light/backyard light) timers.

Try also posting problem at www.dslreports.com (The Ameritech Forum there has especially good "official" tech support folks lurking)

No new construction anywhere nearby. No dimmers or halogen bulbs in or around my house. There is a street light not far away, but wouldn't it have interfered with my connection during the first 5 months at this address? Or at least only interfere when it's on at night?

I also haven't bought any new appliances for the home, and I've tried unplugging all the ones I do have. Doesn't help at all.

And thanks for the suggestion, I'll go post there as well. Maybe they've come across this kind of problem before and have some more ideas

Just an update (Bellsouth isn't working on the problem today, so since I'm off of work today I'm spending the day working on the problem) I downloaded the DrTCP program and reset my MTU to the highest possible that would allow to view web pages on my DSL. I had to set it to 450 I just ran a speed test and it came up 23k (normal when working properly is 1240k)

Not sure what this means as I'm not exactly sure what a MTU is, hehe. But I just thought I'd post it in case it could help pinpoint what the problem is.

Thanks again for the help
