Upgrade/install/rebuild process?
Bought new MB, P4, ram, CDRW and XP upgrade from W98 for a new system. New MB is Gigabyte 8KNXP. (will use existing video card, 3.5 drive, etc.)
Q1 - Should I upgrade to XP Pro before removing C drive and installing into new case with new MB? Currently using W98SE.
Or, should I install exsisting HD (30gig SGate) on to new MB and then, after everything is working, upgrade to XP Pro?
Q2 - Any advice about general sequence of installation, or is my plan reasonable? I have built a few boxes, but not for two years. Afraid I have forgotten something that will create unnecessary problems, so I thought I would seek the collective wisdom of readers before going down the wrong path.
Thanks for sharing knowledge, precautions or tips.

You probably most likely will have to format and reinstall when you move the drive to new motherboard as changes in boards, specifically chipsets on the boards, makes it necessary to format and reinstall Windows to minimize problems. I believe, if I am not mistaken, you could do a clean install of Windows XP from the upgrade disk by booting using a Windows 98 startup floppy, choosing boot with cd rom support, going to your cd drive from the dos prompt, then change directory to /I386, then I believe it's winnt.exe to start setup..........it should ask for your Windows 98 installation cd to verify that you qualify for the upgrade version, but will do a fresh install from there........I might be mistaken on the file name, so if I am, hopefully someone can correct me on that, but I know it can be done.

it would be best to do a fresh install
if you are going to upgrade then get everything working first and then upgrade
if you upgrade and then switch motherboards you will not be happy!

Shawn - kendo,
So, I gather it would be best to start with a new drive on the new system. Process would be to install XP, then shutdown and attach existing C drive as a secondary for file transfer?
Is there any way to save the 'installed' programs or swap installed programs so that I do not have to 're-install' all programs that are now operational under w98?
Sorry to impose, but I don't do this often.
Or, if you have other suggestions about how I might work around the huge re-stall process, I am listening.
BTW, I have Ghost, but I can't make a drive image. Reason is that I have to use Seagate's Ontrack as a drive/bios overlay just so the existing board (MSI-6163 Pro) would recognize the drives. The Ontrack overlay blocks Ghost from operating.
Thank you,
tiller

IF you want to try it ..............I've done this on my last 3 M/B upgrades............... Upgrade your Win98 to XP........... get it to where it's somewhat content.
And when your ready to upgrade the new M/B........
Go into DEVICE MANAGER and delete "Plug and Play Software Device Enumerator" (under system devices)
Now SHUTDOWN and install the new M/B.
Win XP can take this a lot better then WIN98 ever thought of.
Once your all upgraded run some REGISTRY cleaners.
I use RegVac and RegScrubXP ..... find them here http://majorgeeks.com/download.php?id=15
This will clean out all the "old" registry entrys from the past.
As I said earlier , I've done this on my last 3 upgrades and my system is just as "peppy" as when I first installed.
The 2 main "keys" are deleting the PnP software Device Enumerator and SHUTDOWN.
And running the registry cleaners.

oops....I will
try your process. However, have just learned about MSoft's upgrade evaluator software and I have to deal with a few programs first. I will copy your post, print, and download the programs.
Thank you.
It may be a few days before I can get to the entire job, but I will report back on the success or failure.
I also am thinking of a dual boot system, if only because I might lose too many programs under Win98 that won't work with XP.
And, of course, I will have to dload new drivers, if such are available.
Thank you.

Dual-boots are great.
here's a good read on that. http://www.tweak3d.net/articles/win2kdualboot/
XP has a "Program Compatiblity Wizard" which has always worked well for me.
START - PROGRAMS - ACCESSORIES - PROGRAM COMPATIBILITY WIZARD

ooops
I probably will go that way. Using my laptop as my desk computer is down as I try to resolve a problem that prevents me from making CD's for backup.
I did run the MS program. Many of my programs will be obsolete, so once I am up and running, I will decide about dual boot.
Thanks for the reference tip on same.
