Can i do clever things with this website?

I found an old website (not updated since May 15 )

http://xepher.net/~thesilverhand/

Anyway, the way it works now, it's just plain old html, i have to manually edit a news item then re-upload... if that's a word.

Now let's look at another site (not mine) ...

www.theinclan.com

Now, the way the news items are done looks much better. Am i right thinking they can do all that without uploading stuff? Like the admins have an "Add news" button or something, they type it in online and then it updates itself?

How can i do this? If the answer is really complicated pleae point me to a good resourse so i can learn =)

Thanks.

Actually,IMO, i like your site better. Im not sure about how he does the editing online, maybe its a PHP script? Sorry I dont know much about websites (the only one ive ever done is very simple and basic) but i thought i would let you know my thoughts on yours.

Thanks!

Actually, the way i worded my original post was dumb. Aesthetically i prefer my own site, but i think the other site has a better system. Hopefully i can merge the way my site looks with their kind of update system. Hope that makes more sense

But thanks for the compliment on the design.

The 2nd site you list is using a portal that's connected to a forum.

They make the posts in a section of the forum which the portal uses to display new messages.

In other words the portal is told to look in forum A for new posts, when it finds one it displays it on the portal.

You can configure the portal to look in more than one forum for messages, you can also decide how many messages are posted on the portal.

If you have MySQL and PHP installed on your server then you can do this.

You can find free forum software here: www.phpbb.com

You can find a free portal system compatible with above software here: http://smartor.is-root.com/downloads/ezportal_v218.zip

The portal is fully customisable, you could even hide the forum and simply keep the portal (like a weblog).

I'm using both software systems and you can see the result here: www.alhaffar.com/forum/ (about a year ago i was a complete newb who didn#t know anything about forums, php or mysql. I learnt everything as i went along by trial and error).

Same as what ClubMed Said, or you could use CuteNews No need for MySql just php, easy to modify to your liking!

There are other Portals available!

Check them out!!

You should investigate PHPNuke. I have it running on my site. With your design and PHPNukes feature it will be really awesome.
