Nodes keep lossing server connection?

I changed the IP Address to fix A conflict we were having. Now when ever some one goes to print on a network printer for example the connection is lost. So I have to rejoin them onto the the work group and domain? Why do I keep losing the connection? It is a static IP and the nodes are XP Pro and the server is W2K.

On all of the nodes and the server. Under local area connections then the properties of TCP/IP. Oh I also changed the primary and 2nd DNS.

I think this is normal if you change IP's like you did, but once they rejoin the domain, the problem should not occur any more. You say rejoin them to the workgroup AND domain? Is your server a domain controller? Is this a domain? I thought from a previous post you said it was a workgroup.

I know when using DHCP and you want to change the ip scope, you need to migrate from one to the other. Both scopes are active for a while until all machines have been transfered over. I'm not sure of the procedure. I'll see if I can find the details.

It is a domain server. I do go from one to the other but I think that I should loss the workgroup part and be left with only the domain. But that is not happening now I need to re-connect every time.

Can you post what exactly you did? How many pc's are on your network? What was the old ip range? what is the new ip range? Are all your ip's assigned statically. Like I said, there are procedures for doing this. Did you read about this before doing it? An Active Directory domain is pretty picky. I would not do anything to my domain unless I made damn sure it will work when I get done. Even then you can run into problems.

We have 20 PC and what I did was take like xxx.xxx.1.xxx and changed the 1 to a 2 xxx.xxx.2.xxx on most of the nodes and on the server. All IPs are static. the range is from 0-255 I think. I did not read about this before but I have added nodes before.

Well, say you have an ip range 192.168.1.1-192.168.1.255 with a subnet mask of 255.255.255.0. Then you add ip's in the range 192.168.2.1-192.168.2.255, but you keep the same subnet mask 255.255.255.0. The mask will only work for one range or the other. I think you need to make your subnet mask 255.255.0.0 in order to accommodate both ip ranges.

Well I never would have thought of that. I will investagate. So would I change the subnet mask every where I changed the IP addys?

The other thing is that the nodes can all still get thru the network and to the internet.
