E-mail transfer between ver. of Win?

Hey, Don't think I have seen a query about this exact need, so tell me what you think.

I am running Win98 on my backup machine. I have Win2K Pro on my normal every-day machine. I would like to wipe the C: drive and install 2K on this backup machine as well.

Therein lies a possible problem. Besides being a different version of Outlook Express, it will be working under different programming (i.e. NT technology).

I know there is a way to import email, one email at a time probably from one location to another...I have never tried that however, but have read where others have done it.

On this 98 machine in OE I have quite a few folders for different friends and family to archive email. I keep them for up to a year in case someone needs a copy back of that particular email with instructions-directions to grandfathers old cabin in the mtns, LOL.

Can entire folders with several emails be imported?

Can I save the whole Outlook Express folder on the C: drive with everything in it and simply replace the new-empty OE once Win2K is installed new? (Pretty sure if I just did an upgrade from Win98 to Win2K, it would retain the email folders and OE intact...but I do not want to upgrade, I want to format and do a fresh install..and get rid of piles of old dlls and vxds etc no longer needed.

Thanks for any input.

I think the Export function in OE is quite limited. I think you can only import and export between other mail clients. Outlook is much better - you can export pretty much all your settings to a file, then import them to a new location.

I guess it's theoretically possible to copy all your OE .dbx files and overwrite the defaults when you set up your Win2k machine but I wouldn't swear to it since it's not something I've actually tried myself.

Don't do it like that. Do this:
back up your OE store directory from C:\windows\application data\identities\(some number)\Outlook Express
somewhere safe.
Install Win2k with OE.
Set up your account, and go to file->import-> messages
Then choose the version you are importing from, and then the directory you backed up to, then the folders you want to import.
It should go right through and restore everything.
This won't import the address book, but the process is VERY similar.

You could do like I do, just drag/drop the e-mail to a folder with the same name as the folder in your inbox. You can drag/drop them back to the new folder when your done installing your OS.

Thanks guys.. I will save these posts and try that..if I can get that machine fixed again. I screwed up when I decided to keep Win98 and go for a dual boot with Win2K on the D: drive. It loaded 2K to the C: drive instead of D: I can't imagine how that happened. I have setup a dual boot drive several times without a hitch..and even this time, I typed D:\Winnt when it wanted to know where to go. crap..I may have to wipe the C: and start over.

Thanks for the replys..
