sound card problems

I am running win98 with a ESS solo-1 PCI AudioDrive

My problem is very weird. I have checked that all the cables are plugged in correctly, but the problem persists. The problem is that I can barely hear the sound through the speakers or the stereo connected to it. But sometimes it works correctly, but most of the time I can't listen to my favorite music. Can you help me? My computer, the sound card and the speakers are about 3 years old.

First, check your volume settings in Control Panel, including Wave level. Next, check the multimedia applet and ensure your sound card is chosen as the device for playback, instead of Microsoft Sound Mapper or whatever. Finally, check drivers - this issue is usually driver related and an update or reinstall may fix it.

A longshot..but run "sysedit" and look at the "system.ini" and see if the "mmsystem.dll" is listed under the [boot] section.

it should look something like this

drivers=mmsystem.dll power.drv

I had a machine once and somehow the mmsystem.dll entry was missing and the sound was erratic etc.

i have checked my volume, multimedia applet, and updated the driver and checked sysedit but the problem persists. Any other solutions? could it be that my sound card has gone wacky and its time to change it?
