Boot pc with Win 98 or xp

I installed hard drive from old pc into my new pc (as a slave ) that is running xp.

Old hard drive has Win98.

How can I boot up using that hard drive. I want to use my scanner which will not run on xp since the scanner manufacturer will not make a driver for xp.

I don't use the scanner that often so it wouldn't be too much trouble booting up with 98 then going to xp. I also I don't use the scanner that often to justify buying a new one that will run on xp. (I know they a pretty cheap these days but I still do not want to buy a new one)

TIA,
Jim

To dual boot winxp and win98 without a third party bootloader program, win98 needs to be on the c: drive. The way you have it now it won't work. I've used this program http://www.star-tools.com/bootstar/english/ before and I liked it. It costs $25, there are a few others out there also. Using one of those may be the easiest option for you, unless you get a removable hard disk bay where you stick the disk in you want to use and leave the other one out.

What scanner is it? XP offers native support for a lot of scanners, even older ones. That doesn't mean the originally supplied custom S/W will work under XP, but you may get functionality you need.

You need to put the old drive in as a master on the secondary ide port and go into the bios to set the boot order so ide1 will boot first. Primary ide port is ide0. That is, if you got that option but my friend used to do that with 3 drives. How he did it I don't know but he showed me by going into the bios he can boot any drive.

I think Billy may have a good option here.

This is a typical boot.ini file. Its usaully located at c:\boot.ini. Its a hidden file so you have to make hidden files visible. If you edit it as follows yuo may be able to do it.

Typical unedited boot.ini:

[boot loader]
timeout=30
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINNT
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINNT="Microso ft Windows XP Professional" /fastdetect

Edited Boot.ini:

[boot loader]
timeout=30
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(1)partition(1)\WINDOW S
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(1)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Micro soft Windows 98" /fastdetect
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINNT="Microso ft Windows XP Professional" /fastdetect

Take note your XP system directory may not be WINNT, it may also be WINDOWS.

I am not responsible for any NTLDR errors or other boot problems. Try this at your own risk. And make a backup of your original boot.ini file first.

Kids Bootable disc with sys.com?

I'm getting the"no NTLDR" error message after upgreading from win 98 to win 2k and converting to NTFS... it's and older machine (AMD k6, 128MB RAM, and 8GB of HD)
Any idea on how to create a bootable disc with sys.com on it?
Or any other way to deal with it?
Thx.
