Cheap NAS...is this cool?

http://www.ximeta.com/products_netdisk.html

Just basically an external hard drive that connects via usb2 OR ethernet. Seems cool to me, maybe theyve been out for a while and Ive just missed it.

Saw it here http://www.techbargains.com/ listed at www.outpost.com for $100 AR for 80g 7200rpm.

JP

Any opinions??

I got 120 gigs of internal hd for 85 euros. Its a little expensive if you dont need it. Might be usefull for backups, or file sharing tho.

What you've got there, JP, is a simple server in a box. Probably administrated via webmin, or some other generic web interface. Handy if you're going to somebody's house and they don't have a router, or for a portable gaming server perhaps. Kind of a nifty idea. Just a step up from a router basically. You can actually use the box to run apps, or share files.

I'm not really sure what NAS is aside from the fact that it's Network Attached Storage but I can say that 80gb isn't much room to get excited over where I work. Add into the fact that it's both IDE (SCSI is superior for Multi-User enviroements) and has no redundancy built in (No RAID) so I don't think I'd risk using it for much more that stuff I didn't care to lose with as few users as possible using it.

It would be really nice for a small office though where you back up really large files and take them off site. (Like to work with them at home.)
