Crazy icons

I'm running win 98se, and for some reason after shutting down last night I can't get windows to remember where I put my desktop icons, after logging out or restarting the icons all rearange themselves, usually in a complete random order, but all of them start about 3 columns from the right side of the desktop. I've run pc-cillin, spybot, ad-aware, and still it happens. if I have "Autoarrange" turned on, then the icons stay on the left side of the desktop after restart, but that pushes the icons into one big pile and i like them spread out on my desktop in different patterns. As soon as I turn the autoarrange off, and log out, or reboot they go back to random order on the right side of the screen. Yesterday I set up dual display through 2 vid cards, but i rebooted a few times yesterday and nothing happened with the icons, but on first boot this morning....BOOOOM weirdness.

BTW I treid disabling and enabling the dual display but the icons still do weird stuff.

Anyone have the slightest idea as to what might be doing this?

ok, after a few hours of kicking it, threatening it with a hamer, an axe, and threatening to take it apart I came to one more idea. Run scanreg /restore in command prompt. Vouiala, Icons appear correctly. So my suggestion to any Pre Windows ME problem (since the newer versions have the restore wizard) is to try to restore the registry to the previous configuration, and see if that corrects any problem. (this is not the first time it helped me btw, running it fixed 40% of the computers I've been repairing).
