Windows Updates

does anyone know which windows updates to avoid?
once updates/patches have been issued, at a later date, there seems to be fault with them...i know someone who did a 'quick restore' to their computer and wants to avoid the updates or patches that are a problem...they have windows 98...
thanks for any help i can get...

None in Windows 98 that I know of. I just recently re-installed 98 and did all the updates. The only one I don't install is the "Automatic Updates Notification". I'll go there on my own time thank you.

Cheers!

Send a message via AIM to Droppyale Send a message via Yahoo to Droppyale
The only advice I can give you is to read the info on every update and determine if it is needed....

I'm sure sombody else can be more specific.

Welcome to TIMO!

I can't be sure what to avoid, although it is a valid Q ...But I'm almost certain that support for 98 ends on December 31st. Your friend might want to download all of the available updates and save them to disk for future use! >Here!.

I have built W98se dozens of times....I have never had a problem with any of the critical updates.

I have heard many horror stories about updating DRIVERS from the windows site.

Generally what I do is just do all the critical updates...and lately I have also been doing Media Player 9....and after Media Player 9 there will then be another critical update available for that. I dont do any of the language updates or any of the .net crap or stuff like that.

I have done less builds with XP but I have had a few problems with Updating XP....but its been more along the lines of the updates failing...but not messing up the computer.

Welcome to TechIMO!!
As for your question, I have used Windows 98 a couple of times. I would actually avoid installing Internet Explorer 6 in Windows 98 since its actually not worth the time because its almost the same as the other versions, and if you chose IE 6 then you will have to download a bunch of security patches and other fixes and that will take both space and time. Other than that I havent had any problems at all with all the other updates. Many of my friends use Windows 98 because of gaming and they downloaded IE 6 without any problems and they are happy with it. I just think its useless because of the reasons stated above, but many others like it anyways. I hope this helps and that you enjoy our home as much as we do
Feel free to contact me if you have any questions or problems or you can always as you already did make a new thread

I cant get the windows updates with my dialup connection. It'd be nice if I could actually get an exe file that i could either download using a download manager, or download on laptop at college and take home to desktop.

You can go to MS Technet downloads and get every update for Windows 98 onto your laptop at college. It takes longer but it does work AND you have the added bonus of the updates being locally available to you.
