AVG or NAV?
i got miffed with norton antivirus,so i uninstalled it and started using AVG,the free program. i used it for around a month or so and then noticed some weird things happening, nothing major, just some little burps.
so tonite,i did a system restore and reinstalled NAV and discovered 3 instances of the trojan.byteverify virus. now this was after the system restore,so is it possible they were on the restore files before i used AVG antivirus? or did AVG scan all the files(inclding the backup files) and missed the trojan??
if the AVG program did indeed scan these old restore files(i had it programed to scan daily)then i would doubt AVG`s effectivness.
i had NAV virus defination update turned on 24/7. this machine runs pretty much continuously.the restore files were from august 28.
anyone have any experience with the.byteverify??
thanks,eh?

I'd say AVG missed the trojan. Maybe it wasn't updated. AVG is pretty good though now I am using Norton Corporate version 8 which is the latest.

Thats strange since Norton Antivirus is well known for being a bad trojan catcher, at least in my experiences. I use Norton though and I think its a great program, although its only for machines that can handle it well. I would say if you want a free Antivirus AVG is the way to go, and if you have the bucks to spend in a Antivirus then I would at least recommend Norton. Both are great Antiviruses, but Norton lacks in catching trojans but in your experience this is not true though.
By the way, Shahani I like your new avatar
Its funny

Dan, its an old one from last year.
I think I have just been lucky not to get trojans. I can't vouch for NAV's efficacy in snaring them.

I got a trojan once, and I used Norton when I got it. This trojan didnt let me shut down my computer correctly, I needed to shut it down manually. I thought I was safe since my Norton was updated and I am always very careful with all these stuff. One day I just thought that something was wrong so I decided to download AVG. It detected the trojan imediatelly and removed it without any problems. Thats why I think Norton lacks in catching trojans, and many of my friends have had many trojans in their computer without knowing it and they all used Norton fully updated.
Shahani, well I was not available in this forum last year so I didnt know that you already had used that funky avatar

I use AVG and have for years, but it is only as good as the upkeep. You have to keep it uptodate.Of course the same is true with NAV.It's possible the restore files had the virus, but shoot if ya own NAV run both, what's the harm?

I don't think it's a good idea to run two virus scanner's on the same machine at the same time. From what I understand one virus scanner seems to think the other's a virus and vice-versa.
Me personally, I run Norton AV Corp 8 edition on my desktop and AVG on my lappy (don't have a Norton license for it). I can't give a good comparison from one to the other because I don't use the laptop much but I will say that when my license expires for Norton 8 I will be switching to AVG.
Guess that's the best endorsement I can give you.

I've used AVG for years and checked for updates every other days and I haven't got hit yet (knock on wood). My sis had norton and her free updates expired so I installed AVG and updated it. BAM! Three virus found and two were worms. All I can say is THANKS GRISOFT! for your wonderful product and updates all for free.

I stick AVG on all the machines I build for people, seems to work well and haven't had any complaints. At work I use Norton but really only because of the extra features such as central quarantine and remote deployment/managment.
