Q:
When I boot my computer and go to Outlook or Internet Explorer, I get a message warning that there was a BackWeb error and the PC "cannot start BackWeb. BWFiles.dll not found or invalid." Both Outlook and Internet Explorer seem to be working correctly. Should I be concerned about the messages?
A:
BackWeb is a program many computer and software vendors use to feed updates into the PCs owned by their customers, though it is also sometimes used to bombard you with advertisements.
Although you are getting the messages when you try to use Outlook and Internet Explorer, the messages hint that you have either installed or uninstalled some other program associated with BackWeb. Or, it could just be that BackWeb itself was corrupted.
If you are using Windows ME or XP, use Restore to take you back to a time when you were not getting the messages.
Alternatively, search your hard drive for remaining BackWeb files and folders and delete them. Then consult item 18 on my Web site for further instructions on getting rid of the "dll not found" message.
If you want to learn more about BackWeb, there is an interesting discussion online, maintained by Pest Patrol, which sells anti-spyware software.
