Major problem with system not posting!!!

hi, my friend wanted to build anew system so he bought the parts and invited me over to help him build it. before i go on, hear are the system specs:

Amd 2500+ barton
Asus a7n8x delux
2X 256 mb samsung pc 3200 ram
power colour radeon 9600 128 mb

ok we put everything togather and tried to turn it on but as soon as we pushed the on button (on the back of the power supply) the system turned on. there were no beeps, did not post either. now keep in mind we did not push the atx power button yet. so then i thought that maybe something was shorting the mobo out and we took it out of the case and tried to boot it up (this was with video card ram and cpu) still the same thing. i took all of the atx connectors out (power switch connector, reset, hdd led ect) and the mobo still turned out just by turning on the power supply. what is the problem hear? is the mobo defective or it the power supply (which btw is a generic one). plzz help me figure out the problem.

thanx.

Not to sound stupid but the first thing I'd try is removing the PSU and trading it out with a known good one (like the one that's probably in your computer - assuming it has the ummph to run a system with specs like that).

Just a thought. I always try the easy things first.

Did you try to clear the CMOS? That's the first thing I would do

Maybe try unplugging the power supply from the motherboard and see if it still kicks on when you hit the switch. If it does, then it's definately a bad power supply.
