Finance Linux 2.6.0-test6 released (yesterday)

Full post on the LKML can be found here

Ok, too long between test5 and test6 again, so the patch is pretty big.
Lots of driver updates and architectures fixed, but also lots of merges
from Andrew Morton. Most notably perhaps Con's scheduler changes that have
been discussed extensively and made it into the -mm tree for testing.

This also finally gets one of the last "must-fix" things for 2.6.0: the
extended 32-bit dev_t support. Courtesy of Al Viro (with a lot of
prodding and input over the years from Andries).

arm, s390, ia64, x86-64, and ppc64 updates. USB, pcmcia and i2c stuff. And
a fair amount of janitorial.

Linus

Sorry man, should have posted back sooner. I've got it running with no worries. Well, except one. DevFS is OBSOLETE??? Wtf?
Why's this? I've just spent ages getting it working right, and now I've got to go read up on udev and spend weeks getting that right? that sucks.

I haven't got around to building it yet, still running test3 I think. To much stuff on at work etc for much kernel tinkering, although the new scheduler tweaks from Con are appealing.

Hows it running for you so far?

I don't run devfs on my main box (never got around to it and no obvious reason to switch) so that shouldn't be an issue for me, although I really should have a play and see if I can get it working one day.

Well, by the looks of things its pointless now anyway. Its handy as you don't have to look up the major and minor numbers, and you only have the device nodes for those which have the driver installed or the device connected. In retrospect it probably wasn't worth the hassle, as it names things differently and puts them in stranger places.
One thing I did note was that my CDRW doesn't seem to be working, so for the moment I'm back on test5 with the patches I posted somewhere around here.
Also, VMware wouldn't build the modules it needs to run, inserting the test5 ones segfaulted badly. here's further instructions on modications you need to make to vmware (in addition to the ones posted the other time) to make it work with 2.6.0-test6:
http://thomer.com/linux/migrate-to-2.6.html
There's a bit on there about vmware.
Also, I've been reading up on udev, and atm it seems it is little more than proof of concept, and very minimal, still in a pre-alpha sort of phase.
