Hello, I have a pentium 4 intel pro. with 2.0 ghz with windows xp. I turn it on one day and it said that my pcu fan failed to come on. well today tech 2 you got me a new fan and put it in. One day later it did the same thing! After 3 try's I was able to turn her on. Anyone know why this is happening? I don't want to call tech people back ( cost 75.00) I still have a problem. can anyone help me decide what to do next.

do you mean CPU fan? Open up the side of the case and see if the fan over the processor starts up when u press the power button...

Yes, sorry I did mean cpu fan. It comes on and off, I can hear it. But when my computer doesn't start it doesn't come on. It's not on now but my computer is.

I think you can hook up your CPU fan directly to the power supply. Mine has some little blue wires that you can plug into a fan. Try that!

So you're sure its the CPU fan you're hearing and not the power supply? It may be possible that theres something wrong with the power supply or the motherboard

VHockey, thanks alot for helping. I don't really know what is wrong. The computer told me that it was the cpu fan, it will come on and tell me that and shut down in 5 seconds. The guys from tech did say something about maybe the motherboard, becus the new fan he put in comes on and off, and he thought that it should stay on all the time. How can it be the power supply if it comes on to tell me its the cpu? I'm not very smart at all with all of this and really thank you for your help.

Usually there are three fan wires:

Red +12v
Black Ground
Yellow RPM

In theory, if the fan is good and the mobo header is bad, you should be able to hard wire the red and black wires to one of the molex connectors that are normally used for a hard drive or cdrom etc.. Try connecting the red fan wire to the yellow side of the molex and the black fan wire to the black wire next to the yellow one. Leave the Yellow fan wire plugged into the fan header on the board. That should give you a working fan that also reports rpm to the motherboard..

Here is an adapter you can buy that does the same thing with no cutting or splicing.

Welcome to TechIMO!

Debi, from now on talk to us first before you call "tech 2 you". We can help you on any computer problems. This place is loaded with technicians and we're not going to charge you $75 a pop.

If you do have to go to one, get our advices first. On some jobs I had to resort to what golfcart outlined.
